What Is A Swat Officer
A SWAT officer, or special weapons and tactics officer, is a paramilitary officer who uses military-level weaponry and strategy against threats. SWAT officers face some of the most high-tension situations in police work. They usually work for bigger departments like a large police force, county sheriff’s department or federal force because of the costs that their weapons and gear incur. Federal agencies like the FBI, border patrol, secret service, coast guard and national parks service all have their own SWAT forces.

Washington Police Officer Requirements
There are certain requirements that apply to each candidate who wants to become a police officer. Each state and each agency within it has the right to determine the minimum requirements to be a police officer with their agency.
What is specific for the State of Washington is that every full-time peace officer in the state, including the Washington State Patrol, and Fish and Wildlife officers regardless of rank, need to be certified. Only reserve Officers do not need to be certified.The Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission is the only agency authorized to certify peace officers.
Before you can become a police officer in the State of Washington, you must complete 720 hours of basic law enforcement academy training within six months of hire to the law enforcement agency you are employing with. All academy recruits must be physically able to actively and fully participate in the defensive drills and other required physical activities.

What Education Certification Or License Is Required To Be A Police Officer
You will need a minimum of a high school diploma, or an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in criminal justice depending on local requirements and successful completion of a police academy program. Police officers must have CPR and first aid certification and be skilled in the use and care of firearms. A driver’s license is required, and in some cases, a special motorcycle license will be required.
What Does A Police Officer Do
Police officers are individuals empowered by the government to enforce the law. They apprehend criminals, assist and ensure the safety of the public and prevent and detect crime.
The day to day duties of a police officer are varied and will differ depending on location and unit. Patrol officers are responsible for monitoring an assigned area to prevent and discover crime and to enforce regulations. Officers respond to calls regarding crime or disturbances and take necessary action, conduct investigations, collect evidence, make arrests, testify in court, issue citations and complete reports/forms and routine paperwork. Police ensure public safety and aid in emergency situations including fire, medical and search and rescue.

Meet Swat Requirements And Join The Team
The requirements and process to join a SWAT team depend on the force and the area. For some departments, the process to join a SWAT team involves an application and selection by higher-ranked officers, while others require that all officers complete a rotation on the SWAT team.
Most SWAT teams have rigorous physical requirements for entry, so potential SWAT officers pass tests for physical strength and agility. Other tests for SWAT candidates include vision and hearing assessments.
A written test evaluates the candidate’s critical reasoning ability, while an interview and extensive background check help determine whether the officer’s record and background are acceptable. Candidates might also have to pass a psychological evaluation and drug test.
Preparing For The Fitness Ability Test
The physical ability test is about the only open book part of the testing process there is really no excuse for not being prepared! Proper preparation is critical. The Criminal Justice Training Commission offers advice/suggestion on preparing for the physical ability test.
Before beginning a physical exercise program it is strongly recommended that you be cleared by a doctor to undertake such a program. Individuals 40 years of age or older should not begin a program until they have been cleared by a doctor.
Whereas many training routines can be used to improve performance in the Fitness Ability Test, participants should keep in mind that physical training is specific. That is, one improves in those activities that are practiced. If one wishes to optimize push-up performance, push-ups should be included in the training program. Many other exercises can also be included to strengthen the chest, shoulders and arms, but push-ups should be included in the routine.
The following program is progressive to allow the body time to adapt and build up. It is assumed that the applicant will begin this program at least 12 weeks in advance of the test date.
Delayed muscle soreness, 24-48 hours post exercise, may occur as a result of any new exercise program. This soreness should only be mild in nature and should dissipate prior to the next scheduled exercise session.

Former Seattle Police Officers Explain Why They Returned To The Department
SEATTLE There is a renewed sense of optimism for interim Seattle Police Department Chief Adrian Diaz as the department struggles through staffing shortages, rising crime rates and growing response times.
Several former officers who left the department within the past year for other opportunities have returned to the SPD. At least six have returned so far, but Diaz said he’s expecting more.
“A lot of times people come back because of the camaraderie and their fellow officers that theyve grown up in the department with, and that matters, but also the trajectory of where the department is leading, said Diaz. We are pushing initiatives that are cutting edge, that are innovative, and I think people want to be a part of something bigger than them.”
Seattle is in the process of reshaping the police department to create what it calls a national standard for modern policing.
But since the start of 2020, the SPD has lost at least 339 officers for various reasons. A department spokesperson said 69 officers have been newly hired, and the new 2022 city budget calls for hiring an additional 125 officers.
Officer Dion Johnson left the department in 2020 after massive cuts were made to the operating budget and hundreds of officer positions were eliminated. Johnson said he has deep roots in Seattle but chose to become a Mason County Sheriffs deputy for a change of pace.
“With the state of Seattle last year, I thought that my job was in jeopardy,” explained Johnson.

How Much Does A Police Officer Make In Seattle
According to the official website of the Seattle Police Department, the following salary schedule is applicable for 2019.
A Police Recruit would make a monthly salary of $5,044. Once he/she becomes an officer, the first salary they get as a Sworn Officer would be $81,444 annual. After 6 months, the salary will be increased to $87,336, after 18 months, it will go up to $91,308 and so on. The salary at 54 weeks, as per this schedule will be $106,632.
In addition to this base salary, officers are also given overtime and compensatory pay. Longevity pay is also offered along with hiring benefits, vacation leaves, medical insurance etc.

Wscjtc Certification Legislative Mandates
During the 2021 Legislative Session, Engrossed Second Substitute Senate Bill 5051 was enacted by the Legislature and signed into law on May 18.
WSCJTC staff will work diligently to provide updated and relevant information to stakeholders on the website. Seattle Basic Law Enforcement Academy
All SPD recruits must attend the Seattle Basic Law Enforcement Academy. Basic training at the academy consists of a 720-hour training course to prepare officers for police work. Instructional topics include criminal law and procedures, traffic enforcement, cultural awareness, communication skills, firearms, crisis intervention, patrol procedures, criminal investigation, and defensive tactics. Graduates from the academy are promoted to the position of Student Officer while they undergo an additional four weeks of in-service field training, following which Student Officers become probationary police officers for the period of one year and are assigned to a patrol district.
Becoming A Detective With The Washington State Patrol

Training Education And Experience Required To Become A Detective In Washington
Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and 21 or older for an entry-level police officer who may then have an opportunity to promote to detective or criminal investigator after a period of 3 5 years. The agency will require a high school diploma or GED and completion of 720 hours of training within the first six months of hire through the law enforcement academy, or a regional or state training facility if its a small agency. Once the formal training is completed, a period of on-the-job training begins, typically lasting about six months.
Additional formal education may also be required depending on the agency however, candidates are encouraged to continue their education after joining the academy if they dont already have a higher education degree. Some agencies may require college coursework or a degree in criminal justice or law enforcement. Foreign language skills are also an asset, particularly in certain geographical locations.
Other requirements include having a valid drivers license, a clean criminal background history , and be in excellent physical condition. Preference is sometimes given to those with a military background.
Typically, as a recruit, the first level would be acting as a police officer for 3 5 years to gain experience, skills and knowledge in active field work before promoting to detective or other higher levels of law enforcement. There will be written exams as well as an assessment of job performance to determine promotional eligibility.
