On Wednesday, the MTA set a new agency record, interdicting and impounding 17 vehicles at Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge for unpaid tolls and fines totaling over $400,000, the most vehicles ever impounded in a single day at an MTA crossing.
Across all MTA Bridges and Tunnels facilities, agency officers impounded 21 vehicles on Wednesday, with an additional eight impounded during the Thursday morning commute, bringing the total number of vehicles seized within a 24-hour window to 29, with the toll-evading drivers owing more than $500,000 combined.
These are the persistent toll violators. Theyre people who get a bill, we know who they are, and they just dont pay it, said Daniel F. DeCrescenzo Jr., president of MTA Bridges & Tunnels.
